Liposuction is a surgical procedure used to improve body contouring and eliminate excess fat in the arms, back, waist, abdomen and thighs.
Before performing this procedure, a personal evaluation is necessary so that the Surgeon can generate the diagnosis, make suggestions and put forward a surgical proposal, since depending on these factors, the type of technique to be used is determined: conventional, laser or ultrasonic liposuction.
Only by palpating the skin, the tone of the fat, its exact location and its participation in the current form, can the most appropriate technique be determined. During the evaluation, photos are taken on several fronts and the areas to be treated are analysed together.
In liposuction, fat is suctioned from different places and in different quantities to reach the optimum point by shaping the desired areas. Occasionally, some patients present areas that are very thin and do not allow to obtain the appropriate general shape, which is why, sometimes, an injection is made with part of the fat removed elsewhere to achieve a harmonious figure. This is known as Liposculpture.
In this procedure, minimal incisions are made that do not require sutures, bleeding is avoided to the maximum and drains are not left.
It is important to point out that the lipo sculpture is a major surgery that must be performed only by Plastic Surgeons and in an appropriate and certified institution, CANNOT BE PERFORMED IN CONSULTANCY OR BASIC HEALTH CENTERS. NOT BY AESTHETIC OR GENERAL PHYSICIANS.
People in good health who are close to normal weight and with localized fat in certain areas of the body that does not improve with diet or exercise are candidates. Remember that this is not a procedure that fights obesity nor is it the appropriate procedure to lose weight although it can be an element that helps, this determination is evaluated in the medical evaluation.
Patients who exceed an average weight of 75 or 80 kilograms or who have a Body Mass Index BMI above 30, should opt for alternative treatments, such as diets, supplemented with a good physical activity program and bariatric surgeries in patients with obesity morbidity or cardiovascular or endocrine alterations.
It is a procedure that, given its good results and the apparent ease of execution is practiced in all countries of the world. This has led to a large number of failures, as many people without the right knowledge and expertise venture to perform this procedure in precarious conditions that have claimed the lives of many people or left serious consequences.
You should know that this procedure should only be performed by a qualified Plastic Surgeon who belongs to the Colombian Society of Aesthetic and Reconstructive Plastic Surgery, and who is recognized for his quality and experience.
It should be performed in a surgery room suitable for this type of procedure, with all the necessary resources to ensure patient safety in an institution authorized by the Ministry of Health.
The patient must be in optimal health conditions, have no associated illnesses, and not be overweight. Pre-operative tests such as blood tests, clotting tests, and kidney function tests are required to avoid associated complications. It should be known that it is a major surgery and can only be performed by certified plastic surgeons.
You may notice bruises (equimosis) and some swelling in the operated areas, which usually disappear in about three weeks.
You must attend postoperative check-ups when you turn five days, two weeks, four weeks and six months, in these check-ups are discussed complementary aspects such as diet, exercise and others. The girdle should be worn for three to six weeks. Eat healthy, eat vegetables, fruits, lean meats and plenty of water.
In the majority of patients, massage and lymphatic drainage is indicated from the 5th day onwards, which helps to prevent fibrosis or decrease it and reduce post-operative edema more quickly. These should be performed by trained and trained personnel, as poor massage or inadequate ultrasound application can burn, or delay recovery.
Occasionally, some patients present places that are very thin and do not allow to obtain the adequate general shape. It is here when we choose to inject part of the extracted fat in other places to achieve a harmonious figure. This is known as Liposculpture, which is a procedure similar to liposuction.
Most of the time it is complemented with gluteal lipoinjection, augmentation surgery, breast reduction or lifting, which help to define the body contour. When there is excess skin in the abdomen, it must be accompanied by an abdominoplasty.
